Hearthstone Unveils a New Class and a Raft of Exciting Updates

I started to write about Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft earlier in the week to offer my thoughts on what it is like as a new player attempting to jump into the game. While I have tried to absorb information from a variety of websites, podcasts, and professional streams, I imagine that other players experimenting with the game for the first time do not make these efforts. My next article will provide an overview of the resources I am using to improve my skill and have more fun with the game. However, the article below discusses the various game types that are available in Hearthstone, and how new players can best navigate them. Casual and Ranked are always available and free-to-play under the Play button pictured above. At any moment day or night, Casual and Ranked are there for you to play against a random opponent for a single game. The Arena costs gold to enter, while Tavern Brawl is available for a few days each week. The rules of the Tavern Brawl change each Wednesday, and the button is greyed out early in the week while Blizzard performs background work to get the next Tavern Brawl ready for action.

Breaking news: Hearthstone: Descent of Dragons guide. The Hearthstone dev team have been working hard on their new system for ranked play. Hearthstone has had pretty much the same ranked system for years. You start at rank 25, and gain stars with each win until you get to rank 1, and the best among us hit Legend above that. Every player will start at the lowest rank – Bronze. Each rank has 10 tiers, with 3 stars in each tier. According to Hearthstone designer Alec Dawson, this new system will make it easier for players to talk about their rankings.

There are rank floors too – every 5 ranks you can no longer be demoted that season, just like the case now. Matches will be decided by MMR, rather than by simple ranking. This means you’re more likely to come up against someone of your skill level, rather than forcing lower-level players to face decks from the very top of our Deck Tier List.

Hopefully, new players won’t get stomped quite so easily and they’ll be able to get into Hearthstone without being turned off by high level decks.

The daily quests often force me to play some classes that I have not much experience with and no good decks for. This makes it rather frustrating to play them when the matchmaking puts me against opponents that would be fair for my best class and deck.

One idea would be to repeatedly concede every casual game directly at the beginning to lower my win rate and get ranked lower in the matchmaking.

Matchmaking is the process of determining appropriate player pairings when players are queuing up to play Hearthstone. The matchmaking process functions differently for each game mode. In each case, the goal is the same: to try to find a player of similar matchmaking value rating, rank or record as possible. When a player enters the matchmaking queue the system will attempt to find another player in the queue with an identical matchmaking value. If a perfect match is not found, the matchmaking system will “wait a few seconds” and then search again.

For information and statistics on specific types of matchmaking, see Ranked , Casual , and Arena. Matchmaking rating MMR is a special internal rating system used for certain types of matchmaking. MMRs are ‘hidden’ and cannot be viewed by players. MMR is adjusted after each match, depending on the outcome of the match, and the MMR of each player:. Ranked mode MMRs are not reset at the start of every season. Casual mode MMRs do not reset. In Casual mode and the Arena, new players are initially placed into special matchmaking pools to ease them into the game.

Casual mode matchmaking includes a new player pool. Players are initially placed in a separate pool, allowing them to play exclusively against other new players.

Sitting at 4 wins and 26 losses. My random crap decks are getting pitted against decks I see getting used on tournaments on the huge majority of games I played with. Deck build is not taken into account for matchmaking, despite some outlandish claims by occasional forum posters. But it wasnt like this. Something has changed, and if this was intentional, good bye 5 wins on ranked for card back.

Well, something did happen. Before, matchmaking was based on rank, so if you only played until 5 wins, you likely sat at rank 20 most of the season I did the same for a while. Instead, the game will match you to other opponents based on your matchmaking rating MMR. Which means you are more likely to be matched with people who have similar skill to you, even if they run better decks.

It is likely this will normalize eventually, but it might be a rough going for a while. My best suggestion, if you want to keep trying to get those card backs, is to wait until later in the season, when most people will be out of Bronze 10 unless they actually belong there. Hopefully that will help you get easier matches. Good luck!

When you’re fresh to Hearthstone, the only cards you can rely on are the Basic set, most of which you get for nothing. To earn the rest, as we described in last week’s guide, you’ll need to play. And to do that you’ll need a deck, but building one can be intimidating for a new player. Luckily the Basic set hasn’t changed since the early days of the game. So the best recipes for starter decks have barely changed too. We list one for each class below, all tried and tested.

You’ll see certain cards repeat over almost all of them. But nothing is set in stone so feel free to experiment with your own ideas too. There’s a code for each. Copy this, start the game and go into “my collection” and it should offer to build the deck for you. If you don’t have all the cards, it’ll offer suggestions for replacements too.

There are also some suggestions for classic cards you’ll want to add to the deck when you get them. Try and replace a Basic card of roughly the same cost and type. Druid’s big differentiator is ramp, and this deck will teach you how to use it.

In an announcement yesterday, Blizzard revealed an upcoming change to the Hearthstone ladder system. Alas, it was not longer seasons or new matchmaking, but new ranked play floors. What are they and how will they affect the Hearthstone ladder? Here is the official announcement as posted by Blizzard on Reddit :. One thing we can do immediately to help the Ranked Play experience is to make the overall climb from rank to rank feel like more an accomplishment once you hit a certain milestone.

Once a player hits Rank 15, 10, or 5, they will no longer be able to de-rank past that rank once it is achieved within a season, similar to the existing floors at Rank 20 and Legend. For example, when a player achieves Rank 15, regardless of how many losses a player accumulates within the season, that player will not de-rank back to We hope this promotes additional deck experimentation between ranks, and that any losses that may occur feel less punishing.

Therefore, there are now three additional points on the ladder where your progress is saved: ranks 15, 10, and 5. These complement the existing points at rank 20 and legend rank. To evaluate the effects of these new floors, we can take a look at the effect of the current floors. The effect of the floor at legend is quite significant.

Many people stop tryharding upon reaching legend, as within legend rank only the first positions are meaningful and after that it makes no difference whether you finish the season at or
